No Gain Without Pain

The government has come under heavy criticism for spending $1.24 billion on the twin summits including $930 million for security carried out by approximately 14,000 police officers. Yet, the most dangerous rioting happened on Saturday, when a militant group using --so-called ‘black bloc tactics’ left the main peaceful protest rally just to smash windows, vandalize buildings and set at least four police cruisers ablaze. Police used intelligence to arrest some alleged criminals/anarchists. However, a group of hundreds of peaceful bikers intermingled with police passed by. They shouted "Peaceful Protest" obviously upset with ‘cruelty tactics’ carried out by the police on Saturday night against peacefully protesting crowd. Having been criticized for letting things get out of control a day earlier, the embarrassed police cracked down on even peaceful protestors indiscriminately and arrested a total of 900 violent and non violent protestors so far.

 Although, the G20 Summit wrapped up in relative peace and the leaders reached a landmark deal to slash deficits and secure long-term economic stability, yet the targets were regional and vague. But now, they face the daunting task of going ahead without hurting the fragile global economic recovery. Good news, however, remains that the world's most powerful leaders emerged from the G20 Summit with an agreement for advanced economic powers to cut their deficits in half by 2013 and stabilize their debt loads by 2016.

 The communiqué also commits emerging countries to greater exchange rate flexibility without mentioning China by name because China is irritated when other countries try to tell it what to do with its exchange rate. Nevertheless, the United States, Europe and Canada have pleaded with China to allow its exchange rate to fluctuate more freely, and to implement measures that would encourage Chinese people to save less and spend more. "Surplus economies will undertake reforms to reduce their dependence on external demand and focus more on domestic sources of growth," the communiqué says. The agreement was a painful one to negotiate. And many countries fear that the “austerity measures” would hurt domestic economies at a time when they are actually fragile. That’s why the communiqué stressed repeatedly that the austerity measures must be so designed as to enhance long-term growth prospects.

 "We have to make sure we're not rushing too quickly to the exits and all at the same time," said U.S. President Barrack Obama, who had been pushing for a slow removal of stimulus measures."Our fiscal health tomorrow will rest in no small measure on our ability to create jobs today."

 Moreover, the deficits should be reduced not by raising taxes on incomes or businesses, but rather by cutting government spending, boosting productivity or possibly raising consumption taxes as per advice from the International Monetary Fund. The leaders agreed to greater exchange rate flexibility and measures to strengthen their social safety nets. But the G20 leaders also promised to put forward country-specific plans in time for the next summit in Seoul in November. The G20 also made progress on reforms for financial institutions. They agreed to speed up measures to strengthen bank balance sheets. The participating nations agreed on principles that would make sure taxpayers aren't burdened, if the banks go upside down. The governments of all countries can save a lot of tax payers’ money by cutting the size of the cabinet in their respective countries.

 G 20 communiqué also included the following key measures: Setting up a working group on international development issues, the first time the G20 has given itself a formalized a role in helping poor countries. --Reaffirming some of the countries' support for the Copenhagen Accord to control greenhouse gas emissions. --Continuing developing strategies to cut fossil fuel subsidies. --Speeding up reform of the IMF so that emerging markets have more say.--Launching a food security program.-- Reiterating support for the Doha round of global free trade talks.

 Furthermore, the co-operation among G20 should boost global output by US$4 trillion, create tens of millions of jobs, lift even more people out of poverty, and stabilize global growth (IMF).

 Nevertheless, the world leaders are really worried for an extremely heavy debt load. Quite obviously, it has been caused by the incompetent and lazy leaders who have been sleeping over the issues in the past.

 Even the G8 communiqué claims the initiative of maternal health will prevent the deaths of 1.3 million children aged five years and under and 64,000 maternal deaths while enabling 12 million couples to access family planning. Yet, there is no strategic plan on how these goals will be achieved. Though, there is a five-year commitment of the $2.85-billion from Canadian taxpayers’ money without details. Hence, the Muskoka initiative is not so inspiring.

 It is a fact that when the leaders sit down and make unanimous decisions on what’s best for the global economy-- is of tremendous value, but in this technological advanced stage, there is no need of having face to face meetings at such a high price when quality video conferencing is the best option available at a very cheap cost. Spending a huge amount of tax payers' money is a blunder, as it would further damage our fragile economy.

 Since the present system of capitalistic economy does not offer any satisfactory answer to many questions, G 20 leaders failed to realize a need for a change in the economic system. The present system has dragged the whole world near the edge of disaster. It is almost impossible to eliminate the impact of debt load for a long time to come. An overhaul or repair of the present economic system won’t fetch wanted results. It is strongly recommended that the International community must go for a viable balanced economic system based on ethical values, justice and fairness, as the present one is not working. A few other steps include small Cabinet size, “a global denuclearisation” and a “no war pact” which must be signed by all countries.

Late Mian Muhammad Shah Din  had the courage to say no, had the courage to face the truth, and he always did the right thing because it was right. He believed "toughness was life." In any ongoing battle between conscience and self-interest, he always preferred to sacrifice his self interest.

As An Unapproachable Officer

Once, while presiding over an “Enquiry Committee” (ordered by Governor Punjab 1976), Mian Shah Din (PSS) resisted all pressure from higher authorities and delivered his verdict on merit --and ignored the chief minister, the principal secretary to the governor and governor sahib.

Consequently, he was immediately sacked. However, a few years later, he got re-instated and blessed with promotion in 1980.

After his restoration, as Deputy Secretary/Chairperson PCDC Punjab Govt, he went on his official tour of Mianwali - where he was greeted by at least 500 officials (aprox)/ civil staff at the Railway station ( claimed by a senior PAF Officer posted there at the time. 

According to that military officer, Mian Sahib surprised impressively all the official greeters who came there to recieve him (Mian Sb), because the secretariate boss declined pleasant offers from the local departmental heads and the senior executives trying to accomodate him during his presence there.  He preferred to arrange his accomodation on his own.

During his tenure with the government, he earned and enjoyed good reputation, as he never surrendered to the unlawful orders of ministers or any higher authority.

Zero tolerance: Mian sahib regularly called meetings for department heads in his own Office regarding the deceased pensioners. He used to chargsheet any boss if found negligent towards the survivors of deceased (orphans and the widows).

During his tenure as Secretary Pensions (PCDC),  no widow was ever found neglected by any department throughout the province.

Furthermore, he always took necessary official action against lazy and selfish officials.

Within rules and regulations, he actually did discipline a few officers including a lazy SE (Superintending Engineer) for non compliance.

LECTURES: 
Carried out Dawah Work on regular basis among the bureaucrats, police officials and the magistrates at the district level -including the government servants in Lahore area and the vicinity. His lectures were solely for promoting the honest working environment among the public servants to earn Rizq-e-halaal. As a dedicated speaker, he delivered lectures to boost up the morale and strengthen/repair the damaged conscience and morality of the government servants-in order to bring in a corruption free atmosphere in the country. He always preached the noble Qur’an and used Iqbal’s kalaam for explanation.

Most of all, he spent his life making sure that the orphans and the widows were looked after appropriately.

• During General Ayub's tenure as Army Chief, Mian sahib (a civil officer) had to join the Army as Captain. (exercises purposes)
• Mian sahib was selected for 1970-71 foreign training at Civil Service Staff College London England; he graduated the course with distinction.

Mian Sahib breathed his last on June 14th, 2010 (2 Rajab 1431).

I would say you are lucky that your. Tarbiyat was done by a man like him and a bit of unlucky that you lost him.

I had the opportunity to sit with Marhoum Mian Sahib few times. It was very enjoyable to talk to him. Comparing myself with him, his memory was incredible. He narrated several Iqbal's poems. Last meeting I had with him it was in the hospital. He was little drowsy that evening but he felt my presence momentarily & shook hand. I still feel the tenderness of the hand of a man with great caliber. May Allah SWT bless his soul

with comfort & tranquility in the hereafter. Amin!

Thanks for your call on Friday. It gave me so much moral & spiritual strength, you would not believe it. Undoubtedly you Ma' Sal Allah have a very remarkable public relation virtues, which I am lacking. After talking to you, this Friday evening it made me to ponder upon the Tafseer lesson ; ` At the day of Judgment my Salaats & good Deeds will be taken away by the people whom I have mistreated.' Although I try hard to back off in some difficult situations but I am still a human being. So please do pray for me & please do coach me to achieve the level of politeness you have acquired & decent manners you display in dealing with others. Promise ? I have a habit of bad mouthing, finger pointing & criticizing others . Which is not a good recipe of my ` Nijjat' in Akhirah'.

The article  'A man of integrity' is thought provoking in our corrupt society in Pakistan now a days. While there were two very sad incidents recently back home where two families died with self-inflicted poisons.

But still the public do not learn the lesson. The dangerous pace of material greed still has no damper in sight. The people of integrity are gradually departing us leaving a huge & vast vacuum.

Baray Mian Sahib lived an ideal life and with Allah S.W.T's blessing departed to eternity.

Dear Tariq,

Mian sahib was a practical honest Muslim and an intelligent and witty person. I had a few sittings with him after Shazma was married to my brother in law and cousin Azhar. You can guess his character by just counting Allah's blessing upon him in this world in the shape of his contented heart and his blessed children, who are for sure going to be SADQA JAARIYA for him. He brought up more than three daughters and as per our Prophet SAW promise Inshallah shall be sharing with him in Jannat. May Allah rest his soul in peace and bless his children and us all with a guidance to right path in the footsteps of his Prophet SAW.
