Skeptical Treason Trial May Get Messier

The special court is hearing the “high treason case” against the ailing former military ruler Mr. Musharraf who has been undergoing treatment in Rawalpindi’s military hospital for a number of medical issues including heart. According to the doctors, his coronary angiography is needed to optimize the management. They plan to ascertain the possibility of further interventions, like coronary artery bypass surgery. Treatment abroad is a possibility. The medical report has reached the special court and the decision will be made soon.

On the other hand, one of Musharraf’s counsels, Anwar Mansoor, argues that the court has been constituted for a special purpose with limited jurisdictions, due to which it is not entitled to start criminal proceedings and can’t order arrest because that falls under criminal code.

Maybe, a personal vendetta or any political motivation or a ploy to divert attention from the national issues is at play. Let’s wait and see.
The fact is the PPP regime played smart for not going ahead with such a trial, but the N league dared and made the biggest blunder.

Dr. Atta ur Rehman logically destroyed the drama of Musharraf trial in three minutes. While Tahir ul Qadri maintains that justice can’t be selective meaning the singling out of Musharraf, because law is blind. He questioned if government in 1999 was sent home and the constitution was subverted in entirety, yet there is no treason trial. Why is 2007 emergency imposed by President Musharraf is being tried for high treason?
Chaudhry Shujaat recalled that oaths were also taken from the so-called ‘traitor’ in the recent past.

He said if the treason trial is to be carried out then it should be initiated from October 12.1999. Even if the trial is to be started from November 3, 2007, it would affect hundreds of individuals including former army chief Ashfaq Parvez Kayani and PML-Q leader Pervez Elahi. The word ‘Treason’ should not be part of the Constitution. It should be replaced with ‘violator of Constitution’, he maintained.
As all know, Musharraf has been hooked up in numerous judicial cases including the serious murder charges, but he has been granted bails.

The argument that we are forgiving the more serious sin of the military takeover of 12 Oct. 1999 and focusing on the actions of November 3, 2007 is very convincing indeed, where he has been booked under Article 6 (1) which reads: “Anyone who abrogates or attempts or conspires to abrogate, subverts or attempts or conspires to subvert, the constitution by use of force or show of force or by any other unconstitutional means shall be guilty of high treason.”

Nevertheless, the petitioner failed to invoke clause 2 of Article 6; it clearly shows the bad intent of singling out one individual for personal vendetta.
Article 6(2) makes it clear that “any person aiding or abetting the acts mentioned in clause (1) shall likewise be guilty of high treason.”

Unfortunately, only Musharraf was singled out by the 14-member bench of the Apex Court in its judgement of July 31, 2009 which ruled that the declaration of emergency was “unconstitutional, unauthorised and without any legal basis.”

The law is Article 232 permits the President to impose Emergency Rule under certain situations.
Article 232(1) allows the President to tackle a grave emergency if security of Pakistan is threatened, or any part thereof, by war or external aggression, or by internal disturbance beyond the power of a provincial government to control, he may issue a Proclamation of Emergency. Thus, imposing emergency rule is not similar to “treason.”

In 2007, suspending or holding the constitution in abeyance was not an act of high treason. In 2010, however, suspending and holding the constitution in abeyance became an act of high treason. It is legally and rationally ridiculous to retroject this backwards to try Pervez Musharraf for having allegedly committed ‘high treason.’
Therefore, Article 6 is not applicable upon a single individual. It talks about a joint venture/ a team work.

All involved in the conspiracy directly or indirectly are to be tried. Furthermore, the 18th Amendment has made the 17th Amendment null and avoid. This means that the 1999 Military (counter) coup is still open to investigation and no longer enjoys protection. All validation stickers are null and void. Therefore, if we are to abide by the requirements of Articles 25 & 6 of the Pakistani Constitution and apply the High Treason Act, we are to charge each and every individual involved directly and indirectly in the 1999 Army coup. This includes, all previous Army coups, including the coup carried out by the late President General Zia ul Haq.

Since, legitimizing the Military’s takeover using the “doctrine of necessity” argument was quite common, we need the following Solution: The criminal and civil wrongs are allowed to be done in village and the tribal culture, the votes for whole village/tribe are decided by other than the actual voter.

In order to have a genuine democracy, the prevalent electoral system needs to be replaced sooner the better to stop the criminal elite from taking undue advantage from it and reaching the parliament or other public office.
Only the educated and sensible people of integrity must be given the right of electing the right candidates who have utmost integrity, ability and WILL to deliver.
And, the current regime is obligated to comfort the suffering public through dealing with the real issues of economic uplift; avoiding the non issues will be a much better route, of course.
It’s necessary to have a genuine civilian government in power. This will stop future military take over.
Since law is blind, justice can’t be selective.
Let’s learn to respect the law and constitution.
Only genuine democracy is capable of safeguarding the interests of all individuals and the institutions.

Plight of the Islamic World During 2013

Another year has almost ended, yet the ‘unfriendly status quo’ continues to irritate the Muslim world, whereas, the Islamic countries are perceived as the worst nations on the planet. Serious crises, worst form of terrorism, and the general unrest is the ongoing fate of these States. Nevertheless, the foreign meddling by the vested interests is usually blamed for all ills.

The problem adds further as the mutilated history of the Islamic World is allowed to spread maliciously based on the ulterior motives.

The fact is the Islamic world has been continuously experiencing loss of life of innocents including children and the elderly. An irreparable damage done to the movable and immovable property runs into billions of dollars because of the ongoing terrorism.
Terrorism: As the word terrorism is not properly defined, we need to be clear about the concept of terrorism in order to fully understand the menace: This barbaric attitude is applied through a ‘systematic use of violence,’ intimidation and threats aimed at coercing to achieve some goal, especially the political ones. In other words, it’s a state of fear and submission.

All terroristic methods of governing or of resisting a government fall under this category. True, some are freedom fighters, but they have been re-categorized as terrorists. This is also a fact that some terrorist groups are proxy warriors employed only to weaken the writ of the targeted country. The rebels are freedom fighters and are terrorists too depending on which side they are on. So it’s a complicated phenomenon, and unfortunately, the so called Muslims (fake ones) are hired to do the dirty job in the Muslim lands through insurgency, militancy and terrorism. But the media is bound to speak for the benefit of its pay master; that paves the way for the stakeholders. In nutshell, terrorism is said to be in existence when National or International laws are disrespected. Some examples of the unpleasant scenarios are as follows:
Bangladesh:

Sadly, a Bangladeshi citizen ( an Islamic scholar of prestige possessing high caliber) has been put to sleep in a rush; the victim had been booked for his pro-Pakistan role dating back to the 1971 Indian sponsored insurgency aimed at clipping the eastern wing of the country.
After 42 years, the government suddenly wakes up to eliminate the opposition leader on the basis of fabricated charges through Kangaroo court. Indeed, this is unlawful judicial terrorism which is nothing but a politically motivated judicial murder just ahead of controversial Jan 5, 2014 general elections. Now, the Bangladeshi officials are busy arresting the protesters/activists from the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its key ally Jamat-e-Islami in five districts, where police had been clashing with protesters. The BNP keeps refusing to field candidates for the January election, fearing the poll under Hasina will be rigged. Jamat-e-islami, the country’s largest party is barred from contesting the polls. Thus, the opposition is muscling up to topple Hasina.

Egypt: After a prolonged endeavor, Egypt embraced a legitimate democracy briefly and the democratically elected President Morsi was replaced by the illegitimate government with illegitimate constitution. More than 6800 innocents have been mercilessly killed in the last 5 months alone.

Afghanistan: After more than a decade, the country is bracing for the expected consequences once the 2014 withdrawal of foreign troops actually takes place.

Pakistan: Recently, the General Assembly unanimously adopted a resolution calling on the States using drone strikes as a counter-terrorism measure to comply with international law; the UN acted on a range of issues relating specifically to the violation of human rights. The use of remotely piloted planes (DRONES) against the suspected terrorists contained in a comprehensive 28-paragraph resolution: titled “Protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms while countering terrorism” has now been regulated. It’s worth mentioning here that the portion about drone strikes was included as a result of intensive efforts made by the Pakistani delegation.

On the other hand: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has ordered the formation of an anti-terrorist task force to combat militancy. The Punjab government intends to employ 400 instructors from Turkey and Pakistan army to train 2000 new recruits. Helicopters and advanced weapons will be provided to the proposed anti- terrorism force.

Another positive development is the European Union has allowed Generalized Scheme of Preferences (GSP+ package) to Pakistan. The scheme is likely to give a major boost to Pakistan’s exports to Europe, especially the textile and apparel exports. The ‘All Pakistan Textile Mills Association’ (APTMA) expects the GSP Plus status would double the country’s textile exports to US$ 26 billion from the current US$ 13 billion over a four-year period.

Syria and Iran: President Obama was so eager to send his cruise missiles into Syria without having approval from the UN and the Congress. Now, there is no immediate threat of war, also Syria agreed to give up its chemical weapons. However, the furious opposition forces are disappointed because they have been counting on the US air cover to advance their rebellion. Quite apparently, the Syrian rebels are supported by Saudi Arabia, Qatar, while Russia, China and Iran back Syria.

Furthermore, lifting of economic sanctions on Iran has encouraged Iran to give up developing nuclear weapons. Though the interim deal between Iran and P5+1 looks a little fragile at the moment, yet the Muslim countries have to forget about any sectarian differences in order to stand united on single page. Surely, a collective voice is the best path for promoting the world peace.

New Troika of Chiefs Suits the Chief Executive

New Troika of Chiefs Suits the Chief Executive
(Tariq M Javed) http://tariqmjaved.blogspot.com
Dec 11, 2013

With new leadership in the Presidency, at the GHQ and the Apex Court, maybe, the chaotic national scenario is up for a drastic change in any undetermined direction. The president though elected, yet is a favourite of the N-league.
The Chief Justice has been appointed based on his seniority rights, while appointment of Chief of the army staff is the result of superseding , as the seniority rule has been infringed altogether; thus policy of pure merit has been ignored.

Gen. Haroon Aslam’s seniority in this case has been violated; hence the senior most general had no option but to step down.
In other words, traditionally, the tendency in the past has been to ignore seniority rights to oblige the favourite ones through hand picking, indeed. Since President Ayub Khan’s time, mostly handpicked generals have been appointed as the army chiefs. Generals including Musa Khan, Yahya, Gul Hassan, Zia ul Haq, Asif Nawaz, Waheed Kakar, Pervaiz Musharraf, and Pervaiz Kayani, all had superseded their seniors.
Gen. Jahangir Karamat, however, remains an exception. In 1995, the late Prime Minister Ms Benazir Bhutto had appointed him as the Army Chief purely on seniority basis.

In the Current case, the expert analysis suggests that Gen. Raheel Sharif has been given preference mainly for two reasons: Number one is his experience of being in-charge of “Training and Evaluation of Army,” and secondly, he has been recommended for the post by two dignitaries i.e. former President of Pakistan Justice Rafiq Tarrar, and a retired Baloch General Abdul Qadir, who is now a cabinet member.
General Sharif, a soft-spoken gentleman, comes from a dignified family with a long military history: his father and brothers were all military officers. His elder brother, Major Shabbir Sharif shaheed, was among the country’s most decorated officers, winning both its highest military AWARDS, the Sitara-i-Jurret in 1965 and the “Nishan-i-Haider” for his brave role in the 1971 war. It’s worth mentioning here that Major Aziz Bhatti shaheed was his maternal uncle.

On the other hand, Prime Minister Nawaz Shareef has been suffering in past at the hands of military, he preferred to avoid another head on collision with any commando as head of the GHQ.
This paved the way for General Sharif, a downright professional soldier to get what otherwise belonged to his senior. So. he is the most lucky soldier for having been chosen for heading one of the most professional armies of the world for next three or more years.

JUDICIARY: Finally, one of the most competent judges, Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhary has already retired on December 11, 2013 after having served for seven years with utmost integrity, of course.
The current chief Justice Tasadduq Hussain Jilani will be in office for a few months before he retires as well, so he won’t be as aggressive as his predecessor has been.

Apparently, PM Shareef is now in more control of the situation after the new favourite troika of chiefs is in.
Resultantly, the stress level of the Chief Executive/Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif must have already been in the mode of “easing off” by now.
However, the question remains whether the ‘improved comfort level’ would be any good enabling him to deliver as he promised during his election campaign?

Obviously, the top-level appointments in the military and judicial sectors should help curb corruption and improve overall picture of governance. Nevertheless, the PM must apply budgetary constraints to control financial crisis.
The fact is, unless those involved in corruption are held accountable and punished severely, PM Shareef stands no chance to cling to power for long.
The nation is fed up with status quo already. Moreover, due to the chronic nature of the ongoing scenarios, the hope for improved governance tends to be fading away faster than it was thought initially.
It’s highly disappointing that the civilian administration is still unable to adapt to the “changed scenario,” and the negative development only adds to the misery allowing the sub standard governance.
Unfortunately, the current regime is viewed as followers of the path of its predecessors, not good news, is it?

Surely speaking, only quick solutions to the problems afflicting the country would let the current regime led by Nawaz Shareef complete its tenure.
The clues are many, but some are more convincing enough to be tried at the earliest to pull the country out of the ongoing quagmire of debt.
Sooner the painful challenges are dealt with at a faster pace, better it is for the interests of Pakistan: A “Pakistan Friendly Foreign Policy,” elimination of terrorism, stopping brain drain, discouraging capital flight, measures to control mega corruption, reversal of hyper inflation, kick starting the stalled economy are all essential challenges to be prioritized.

“Trade not Aid” should be implemented in letter and spirit. Re-opening of the flood gates of foreign investment would only be facilitated once the Rule of Law is respected and the Constitution is strictly followed at all levels.
A viable military strategy and good diplomacy approach is the key to successful ties with all neighboring countries.
Most of all, each and every member of the civil society, media at all levels, government functionaries, military, and of course, the politicians have to share the pain together and help the country to stay afloat for years to come.

The P5+1-Iran Interim Deal, a Historic Step Forward

Every sovereign country has a right to develop better capabilities for its defence, yet discouraging/stopping the development of deadly weapons of mass destruction is vital to the economic prosperity and peace of the world.

Similarly, Tehran’s controversial nuclear program is also seen as a threat by its neighbors and the world powers. The US-Iranian confrontation lasted for a little over three decades giving a severe headache to the regional players. Therefore, a big bundle of sanctions were imposed on Iran by the UN, US and the European Union.

For a last little while, President Obama has been in touch with the newly elected leadership in Tehran on the issue.
Fortunately, there is some relaxation now in the ongoing tense scenario: There is hope ahead - for stability in the Gulf and Mid-East region after successful talks between Iran and the P5+1 (China, US, Russia, France, UK, and Germany). An agreement has been reached, whereby Iran and the P5+1 would move forward during six months to “comprehensive solution” as planned.

In return, Iran appeared to be taking necessary action to keep the deal on track and has agreed to a series of measures as well.

Following are the significant points of the historic Nuclear Deal:

1. Iran accepted to stop enriching uranium beyond 5% neutralising its stockpile of uranium enriched beyond this point
2. Iran accepted to give greater access to inspectors including daily access to its key nuclear sites namely Fordo and Natanz.
3. Iran agreed to stop further development of the Arak plant believed to be capable of producing plutonium.

IRAN GAINS:
1. There will be no new nuclear-related sanctions for six months provided Iran maintains the accord.
2. Some sanctions will be suspended on trading in gold and precious metals, on Iran's car-making sector and its petrochemical exports.
3. Frozen oil sale assets will be transferred in instalments, bringing in some $4.2bn of extra revenue.

President Obama was happy with the deal saying it would help prevent Iran from building a nuclear weapon.
But, some Gulf countries including Saudi Arabia see Iran as a threat and trouble maker in the region.

On the other hand, Iran has survived despite the tough sanctions that shackled its economy, yet a future without sanctions means a lot for its people; other nations would benefit too.

Pakistan has welcomed the understanding reached during the Geneva Accord. Being a brotherly neighboring country of Iran, Pakistan has always underscored the importance of a viable solution to the issue as it would contribute towards stability of the region.

If the Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline project is allowed, it would also help stabilize the region.
Nevertheless, there are countries that did not like the interim deal; they have their own reservations:

Canada is not happy with the historic pact and would not be able to reap any benefit of the deal despite its major rescue effort for freeing the American hostages through issuing fake Canadian passports during the US Embassy Ordeal in1980.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the interim deal was a historic mistake because “the most dangerous regime in the world took a significant step toward obtaining the world’s most dangerous weapon.” He announced that an Israeli team would travel to Washington for talks on the deal."This accord must bring about one outcome: the dismantling of Iran's military nuclear capability," he said.

Under the interim deal, Iran would receive around $7bn in limited, temporary, targeted, and reversible sanctions relief, while a permanent agreement is sought. Moreover, the interim agreement with Iran - the world's fourth-largest oil producer - prompted a fall in oil prices in early Asian trading with Brent crude falling by more than 2%.

Following the talks, Iranian President Rouhani reiterated via a nationwide broadcast last Sunday that his country would never seek nuclear weapons. The Iranian people won as the biggest beneficiary through this deal.
The prevailing tough sanctions, however, were intended only to hit the Iran ruling elite. According to reports, the sanctions against oil and gas exports were instituted to restrict the government finances.

Beyond doubt, the sanctions have caused much more damage than planned making the Iranian people suffer who wanted a quick escape from isolation. They hoped for an improvement of economic conditions through relaxing/removing sanctions by electing Hassan Rouhani as President as new leader.

Indeed, Iran is in the interest of all players in the region. “The US has its interests — because, Iran is a lucrative market. Iranians need a lot of infrastructure for rebuilding that could generate billions of dollars for US and UK oil companies,” said Abdulateef Al-Mulhim, a retired Saudi navy commodore (Arab News). Europeans also want a slice of the expected lucrative oil and gas contracts.

Though, this deal does not scrap the Iranian “uranium enrichment program,” the intent remains to curb the said enrichment, because it has been irritating the concerned West.

The experts’ view: Developing a nuclear device does have implications far beyond weapons proliferation in a war-torn region which is highly obstructive to the world oil and gas supplies, of course.

Iran has six months to satisfy the World that its nuclear technology is for non military purposes only.

"Repairing the Writ of State"

The elected leader doesn’t stand a chance unless he is capable of a qualitative delivery for the welfare of his people at home and abroad. Nevertheless, during his recent visit to the US, Prime Minister Mian Muhammad Nawaz Shareef didn’t efficiently stand up for Pakistan’s serious concerns. He should have spoken up beyond reading his written speech.

As country’s chief executive, the prime minister is expected of being a good spokesperson with above average statesmanship qualities. The other mistake he made was his playing as a Foreign Minister without the required skills. Simply speaking, the honorable prime minister messed up the golden opportunity to persuade Mr. Obama about what was good for Pakistan and the region.
Since the region is on fire mischievously, the main target is none but the vulnerable people and the state of Pakistan through proxy, of course.

Everyone knows with clarity that the embattled country, around a decade ago, used to enjoy a peaceful time. It was almost free from any form of extremism or militancy. Nobody ever heard TTP (Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan).
After having emerged, however, the new militant group started getting active against its own people.
We remember when General Safdar Hussein Core Commander Peshawar went to the North Waziristan specifically to negotiate peace. Luckily, there was a peace deal between Naik Muhammad (aged 27), the then chief of the militant group and the visiting Gen. Safdar. But, soon after, Naik Mohammad was shot dead from the sky, and the peace deal collapsed as a result, unfortunately.

Then, the never ending ‘cycle of hostility’ against Pakistan began ferociously.
The fact is “the so called sovereign Pakistan” has been facing roller coaster rides ever since and continues to suffer from the most critical time in its history till today.

It’s an open secret that General Musharraf was the one who initially had allowed the drone strikes in the FATA area; nevertheless, the strikes were intensified in the later years causing the extensive collateral damage.
The expert opinion suggest that the counter productivity of the strikes actually led to the mushrooming growth of many more militant groups who were only targeting Pakistani public, the infra structure, government offices, mosques, even the GHQ. At the same time proxy warriors kept on joining the band wagon which was aimed at nothing but dismantling the country by weakening its writ.

During the tenure of PPP regime, the things were almost out of control simply because of administrative paralysis and sub standard governance. The crimes of power theft, the related energy crisis, the bitterness of circular debt, capital flight and the brain drain were all the natural outcomes.
Defiance of the apex court verdicts was among the norms which proved to be another contributing factor in the overall national scenario.
Consequently, the mega corruption became rampant; hence, the economy has been upside down.

Surprisingly, The Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Choudhry did not invoke Article 190 of the Constitution to enforce the judicial decisions through ordering the army. And, the Army has been hesitant to take any action to restore Karachi Law and Order situation. But, it must be noted the Pak military did an excellent job while freeing Swat from the clutches of Mulla Fazlullah.

Furthermore, the overall situation throughout the country was quite ripe for the social goons and thugs to commit any unlawful activity at will.

It’s worth mentioning that the dedicated work of Karachi Police under IG Shahid Hayat with the help of Rangers has been an immense success so far. Also, the work of Zulfiqar Ahmad Cheema PSP has been a solid contribution while streamlining the passport related irregularities, and because of him, the motorway policing has immensely improved as well.

As suggested by the main stream print and electronic media, there are around forty plus militant groups just in FATA. Hence, negotiation is better than military solution.

Now, the time of “American withdrawal” approaches near - so does the panic, but the problem is far from over.
The Americans have started negotiating with Mulla Umer already.
The Pakistan government was almost close to start a peace dialogue with the TTP, when the TTP Chief was droned to death a few days ago leading to the worst anger of Pakistani Taliban.

The irony is, the new TTP boss Mullah Fazlullah is based in Afghanistan which makes the analysts raise their eyebrows as they smell something really fishy.
Obviously, militant groups cannot operate unless they are groomed and sponsored by the vested interests. Destroying or destabilizing a country is usually the main goal. Most probably, a proxy war against Pakistan is still in progress.

Surely, the TTP is sophisticated enough to manipulate the public opinion; they say, “Not the Pakistani public but the security apparatus will be their target now.”

It’s strongly suggested that the civil society should be on a single page to register their concern with the US instead of attempting to disturb the NATO supplies at this point in time of instability.

Go for more effective approach which is ‘one united voice’ as it would be loud enough to reach the White House.

It’s better for Islamabad to talk to the real stake-holders from tribal areas who are more interested in ending the war on their land rather than imposing a barbaric type of customs which has nothing to do with Islam.
Insisting for a decent table talk to sort out the issues is the best first option beyond any doubt.

But, the TTP appears determined to launch a new wave of attacks across the country. If that be the case, the government must not hesitate while giving total mandate to the armed forces as the last option to crush the militancy.
The government must handle the challenge with diligence to rescue the country via targeting the identified enemy.

The Taliban Factor

In view of the Russian invasion of Afghanistan, more money and resources were poured in the madrassa system. Saudi Arabia and the US were more than happy to help Pakistan to win the war on the basis of ideology. Since the motivation was pretty strategic, the wide net work of Islamic madressahs (schools) were engaged as “mujahedeen making factories” to ensure a continuous supply of the trained willing fighters.

Later on, the same mujahedeen were re-labeled as Taliban (Taliban is plural of Talib that means student).
After defeating the soviets, Pakistan encouraged and helped the formation of Taliban regime in Afghanistan to safeguard its own strategic interests. No doubt, having a friendly government in Kabul would secure Pakistan’s western border, but that was never allowed to continue.

Many years afterwards, the relations between OBL (Osama bin Laden) and America deteriorated to a point where Osama was declared as a fugitive criminal. And, the presence of OBL in Afghanistan paved the way for the US military intervention leading to the demise of Taliban government.
With the U.S. control in Kabul, came Mr. Hamid Karzai in power.

Ever since the opportunist India has been successfully exploiting the situation; twelve consular offices are reported to be operative along the PAK Afghan border. It’s one of the major irritants that make Pakistan very nervous.
The armed to teeth militants of the BLA (Baluchistan Liberation Army) and the TTP are equipped with top of the line weaponry. Pakistan always blames the Indian involvement behind terrorist activity throughout Pakistan.

This scenario keeps Pakistan on its toes as its writ continues to remain challenged and compromised. The FATA area menace of militancy on both sides of Pak Afghan fenceless border has destroyed the region economically.
Since the dream of military victory hasn’t come true, as the 2014 withdrawal of the US forces is nearing; a negotiated settlement seems to have potential for some viable solution. However, all stakeholders are to be in agreement.

Pakistan claims that drone strikes are counterproductive; nevertheless, Washington advocates its effectiveness for countering terrorism, and of course this serves as pressure tactics to bring the Taliban to the negotiating table.

The US has already facilitated the opening of office for negotiating with ‘Afghan Taliban’ in Doha, Qatar. Currently, it’s in the midst of peace talks with the Afghan Taliban.
Furthermore, Washington has no objection if Pakistan goes ahead with having dialogue with the banned TTP (Tahreeek-i-Taliban Pakistan).

Nevertheless, the prevailing skepticism makes the critics think that the current universal crisis of terror has been cleverly created by those who have no respect for human values. The terrorists worship money even if they have to create crises.

Indeed, the chaotic scenarios have left the flood gates wide open for the unlimited opportunities to make material gains at the cost of life and property of the innocent. Mysteriously, the media remains addicted to the opportunities as well for monetary gains.
Obviously, it’s not hard to figure out that there are certainly some criminal factions (the so called Taliban) who are like ferocious animals employed to work as merely proxy warriors. These monsters have absolutely no religious affiliations.

Some critics argue against the negotiated settlement. Because, there have been a few peace deals in the past including Shakai, Sargodha peace accord, Miran Shah peace deal, but none worked.
Swat is also a case in point, where the peace deal was messed up, as the Taliban militants attempted to introduce their version of Islam. Thank God, Pakistan armed forces succeeded in liberating Swat after a highly successful military operation.

Facilitating the development of an effective apparatus is needed to control the un-leashed monsters, because the prolonged war against the highly equipped TTP has not yielded any significant result.

The US support for Pakistan’s initiative to hold dialogue with Taliban is like one NOC (no objection certificate). Briefing Pakistan journalists on last week, senior US officials acknowledged that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had shared with them his plan to engage the Taliban. “And we told them we have no objection to it as long as the Taliban agree to recognise the Pakistani constitution and respect the rule of law,” said one US official.
Mr Sartaj Aziz said “the government had already covered a lot of grounds and talks with Taliban are likely to start in the next few days.”

In the past, some countries eventually ended up having dialogue with the militants. For example: the IRA in Great Britain and Ireland, the Tamil Tigers in Sri Lanka, and the Naxalites in India and peace talks between the US and the Viet Cong took place when all military means failed.

Acknowledging Pakistan’s efforts to support an inclusive reconciliation process in which Afghans determine the future of their country, both Obama and Nawaz wanted the Taliban to join the political process and enter into dialogue with the Afghan government.

Unfortunately the Muslims have already been divided in sects such as Shia, Sunni (Deobandi, Brailvi), Wahabee, Malki, Ahle Quran, Ahle Hadith, and many more with their own agendas not to serve Allah but others.
"As for those who divide their religion and break up into sects, thou have no part in them in the least: Their affair is with Allah: He will in the end tell them the truth of all that they did." (The Quran Surah Al-An'am (6:159).

Let’s give the peace deal another try to save the innocent lives.
Only as a last resort, Pak Army would need a clear mandate for an all out operation for completely wiping out the militant element.

"Hajj Purifies the Sincere Ones Only"

The annual Hajj performance by the Muslims is in a way a marvellous opportunity to bring them together from all over the world to worship Allah the Almighty at one geographical location in a well organized manner. The massive gathering of three or more millions of Muslims at one common place of religious worship is, indeed, a confirmatory; the commendable step that gears up integration and solidarity in the different shades of the Muslim Umma.

Naturally, if the Muslims from different parts of the World gather together and interact with one another as the members of the same family, the feelings and mindset of oneness is developed leading to an emotionalised atmosphere of relationship amongst them. Most probably, there is no other prerequisite for the unity, affinity and harmony ever noticed of any community.

One has to have an intention to perform Hajj, and then the men have to be dressed in two un-hemmed white cloths, while the ladies need to be modestly dressed keeping face and hands uncovered. The rituals are to be performed the same way as done by Prophet Mohammed Sallahu Alaihi wasllam.

The ritual of walking seven times counter clockwise around the Kabah is called Tawaaf. Then, there is running or walking seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwah. The throwing of pebbles at “Jamarat” is to signify the defiance of the devil and is an expression of the pilgrim’s intention to obey Allah’s commandment, and is a demonstration of his humility and servitude to Him.

The slaughtering of the animals and shaving or clipping of the hair are the actions that signify about the sacrifice of Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him).
The annual Hajj also is famous for teaching discipline and forbearance to all participants. In fact, the observance of the rites of Hajj in the faithful manner keeps the pilgrims very close to the purity of mind, and that’s the solitary mode to acquire the vicinity of God Almighty, indeed.

Furthermore, the Hajj is the world’s greatest example of eliminating social discrimination and any other human differences. It’s based on the fact that all mankind is from Adam and Eve: An Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab, nor does a non-Arab have any superiority over an Arab; white has no superiority over black, nor does a black have any superiority over white; actually, none has superiority over another except by piety and good action, said the prophet during his last sermon at Arafat valley during his only hajj, as he performed Hajj just once.

While delivering his sermon, our beloved Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be upon Him) advised the Hujjaj, “Regard the life and property of every Muslim as a sacred trust, return the goods to their rightful owners, and hurt no one so that no one may hurt you.”
He said further, “Remember that you will indeed meet your Lord, and that He will indeed reckon your deeds. God has forbidden you to take usury (interest), therefore all interest obligation shall henceforth be waived, your capital, however, is yours to keep, you will neither inflict nor suffer any inequity.”

“Beware of Satan, for the safety of your religion. He has lost all hope that he will ever be able to lead you astray in big things, so beware of following him in small things.”
“Do treat your women well and be kind to them for they are your partners and committed helpers. And it is your right that they do not make friends with any one of whom you do not approve, as well as never to be unchaste.
O People, listen to me in earnest, worship God, perform your five daily prayers, fast during the month of Ramadan, and offer Zakat.

Perform Hajj, if you have the means.”
The prophet said, “I leave behind me two things, the Qur’an and my example, the Sunnah, and if you follow these you will never go astray.”

Nevertheless, let’s remember - the Hajj, the Sacrifice and all Ibaadah may be nullified, if we tend to re-join the sinful life. This means if our attitude doesn’t change, Allah will never help us achieve our Islamic purpose of life. Obviously, if we are not careful enough, the element of hypocrisy in our thoughts and actions is more than sufficient to ruin our effort of connecting to our Creator/Lord.

Moreover, the disease of hypocrisy attacks those weaker ones who fail to maintain TAQWA, and those who don’t follow the Qur’an and Sunnah; hence are at greater risk.

Since, the polluted thoughts lead to social vices 24/7; we must resist them to maintain good connection with our Creator.
The problem is some people go for Hajj, yet, they don’t hesitate to indulge in arguments, fights; or lose talk; hence are liable for maintaining the stinky environment around them.

Furthermore, it’s usually seen that some people during Tawaaf (fard) love to violate the general atmosphere by committing short cuts to reach for kissing the black stone (hajr-e-aswad) which is just a Sunnah. Accidents do happen with this nonsense.
If there is no self discipline, there is no Ibaaddah. If selfishness is allowed to frustrate the others, how is the hajj valid then?

However, on the other hand, the true believers behave well with utmost patience despite the odds. From the very start, they observe calmness and when they return after hajj, they are really transformed into good citizens and they are Sin Free like a newly born baby.

May Allah (SWT) enable all the Hujjaaj to perform the hajj within the allowed parameters.
May He accept the Hajj of all pilgrims this year and help them return home safely in good spiritual purity and a sound physical health as well.(Ameen).
All others should still take the message based on the Prophet Muhammad’s last sermon leading to more unity among the members of Muslim community all over the globe enabling them to have self-control and unconditional submission to Allah (SWT).
Certainly, if the Islamic values are appropriately observed and practised sincerely, beyond doubt, there is a real understanding of the significance of Hajj and Eid-ul-Adha.

“Ray of Hope amid Climate of Mistrust”

Most probably, the political leadership in India is addicted to score political mileage through cursing Pakistan. Higher the degree of allegations and hatred against Pakistan, more are the chances to be elected to come into power. If that’s really the case, Dr Manmohan (81) has been up to the mark with his anti Pakistan tough tone, while addressing the General Assembly recently.
Following the speech of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in the general assembly, the prime minister of India had to target Pakistan labeling it as the “epicenter of terrorism” in South Asia.
The Indian premier didn’t even hesitate a bit while repeating the same “memorized version” of his story during his one on one meeting with President Obama.

Is it a reality that the Indian voters hate Pakistan so much that their PM felt so pressured to shift most of the blame of his regime’s failure towards Pakistan in order to get elected again next year? The audience can easily figure out the answer. Here, Indian premier’s attitude suggests there is a significant political mileage in Indian politics through blaming Pakistan. The fact of the matter is Mr. Singh’s party faces an electoral challenge early next year against the extremist Hindu parties that have called for a tougher position against Pakistan.

On the contrary, Nawaz Sharif (63) was more optimistic while telling the United Nations last Friday that he wanted “a new beginning” with India. “We stand ready to re-engage with India in a substantive and purposeful dialogue,” he said during his speech to the United Nations General Assembly. Vow!

Yet, India stubbornly creates negative arguments by complaining about non-action on the Mumbai attacks and blames Pakistan’s inability to suppress jihadi elements and the recent LoC violence. But, Pakistan has been rightly upset due to India’s lack of willingness to take up the core issues including Kashmir, Sir Creek and Siachen and the issue of Pakistan’s share of water from the flowing rivers.

Thank God, subsequent to the “heavily polluted Indian speech” in the general assembly, the ‘aftershocks’ changed into friendlier atmosphere to bring the rivals closer during their one on one meeting in the larger India Pakistan dynamic. Though, many claim it was just a waste of time as it ended up with nothing but inaction, yet any benefit of the said meeting cannot be overlooked either. Mr. Singh was very cautious during his meeting with Mr. Nawaz. Probably, there is a great deal of trouble for his political party to survive the 2014 election.

In spite of all this, Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif believe that normalization of ties is the desired outcome between India and Pakistan. Moreover, Prime Minister Sharif asserted for a sustained dialogue between the two countries. The two countries can prosper while making movement on the issues which have adversely affected relations. Sadly, both sides failed to come up with a workable mechanism to achieve the goal of normalization.
Positive development: According to Shivshankar Menon (India’s national security adviser), Mr. Singh and Mr. Sharif are in agreement to remove Kashmir related tensions which triggered three wars between Pakistan and India since 1947. The leaders have also pledged to push senior military officers to find “effective means” of restoring a 2003 cease-fire in Kashmir, said Mr. Menon.

Both the premiers agreed to pay visits to each other's respective countries. Of course, something is better than nothing.
Other problem is the economic position of India is not as sound as it was four years ago. The future condition of diplomatic relations between India and the U.S. is also preparing for a rough ride ahead. If the BJP assumes power in India after winning the upcoming Indian elections, a different scenario is quite predictable: The next expected Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, has been twice denied visas to go to the USA, in 2005 and again in 2013, on the basis of his record of human rights violations. Therefore, it’s quite likely that the entire ball game with respect to Indo-US relations changes.

It may safely be presumed after the Manmohan’s recent visit to the U.S., that the era of U.S.-India understanding is almost over.
Friendly relations between India and Pakistan are of crucial importance for mutual trade and economic well being indeed.
Since, Indian water terrorism is costing Pakistan in terms of agriculture and its economic prosperity, India must stop violating water rights of the low riparian Pakistan.

Beyond doubt, there is a desperate need for improving the India-Pakistan equation. Mr. Sharif seems moving slowly and carefully. And, Mr. Singh is not so sure for his re-election. So, at end of the day, there is nothing but inaction.
Quite obviously, the words without action are meaningless.

Thus, without wasting further time and resources, a resolution of all outstanding matters, including Jammu and Kashmir, foreign interference in Balochistan, Siachen, Sir Creek and water issues must be a top priority to pave the way for viable friendship between the long time rivals.
The key word is security; prosperity follows it.

Civil Armed Forces Rescuing Microcosmic Karachi

It has never been so difficult to figure out the significance and the negative impact of bringing public life to a standstill in the country’s commercial city. Obviously, if Karachi sinks, it would take rest of the country with it.
Most probably, that’s what serves the enemy. Amid various ongoing national crises, the enemy benefits the most by engaging criminal elements and other professionals best suited for proxy war against the country.

On the other hand, Pakistan’s problem number one is its fake democracy which is usually based on unfair means. The unfair pressure tactics which work very well in favour of the potential candidate to get elected or re-elected over and over regardless of his lacking integrity or his poor past role.

Unfortunately, the influential political mafia is habitual of always getting actively engaged for grabbing power at whatever cost. Like it or not, the vulnerable naive public goes along quietly just to avoid any probable reprisals.
Not only, the fear factor but the rigging and over stuffing the ballot boxes are causes of valid concern, hence, there are many question marks about the legality of polls.

Furthermore, from time to time, fingers are pointed and the eye browS raised about the efficacy of electoral process in Pakistan.
If electing the dishonest or incompetent electable is a democracy, then it’s highly unfair with the politically aware masses who want to exercise their right to choose brilliantly based on nothing but merit. But, the current system opens gates of national and provincial assemblies for all sorts of people including the human vultures that now are in as representatives of the voiceless majority.

As seen, the status quo of malpractice continues to grow unchecked, thus, burdens the national exchequer, and because keeping incompetent ruling elite and the sleepy opposition is way too expensive and a big financial burden on the tax payers’ pockets.
Painfully, these politicians turn out to be nothing more than worthless national asset, hence a major liability.
A fake politician only safeguards his own/personal interests, hence, is unable to go beyond a lip service leading to nothing more than a poor delivery.

With all that said above, it becomes quite clear how the situation becomes quite ripe for the anti social activity. Actually, the motivated bad groups are actively involved in doing maximum damage to commercial hub of the country.
The way Karachi presents its shameful picture, and the momentum of destruction continues to strengthen the deadly scenario, Pakistan's vulnerability becomes thought provoking.
Looking at Karachi issue for a close analysis, we need to be assured first if the targeted operation is really working favourably. And, in case the civil armed operation doesn’t backfire, of course, that really means positive news.
Nevertheless, it’s too early to expect the desired goal as targeted, because the intended correction is time consuming, of course.

No doubt, it has been a severe headache handling a number of proxy forces. And the Taliban factor, Liyari Gangs, target killers, extortionists, transport mafia, land mafia, water mafia, aliens, selfish elite of politicians have already gone out of control.
MQM’s recent request for targeted army operation is unacceptable for a number of reasons.
All we need is a de-politicised police force and the Rangers. Surely, they can deliver if properly equipped and given more powers to fight out the armed to teeth thugs and terrorists.

In fact, recently, the Rangers and the Police have been equipped with better quality of State apparatus plus communication devices and an improved investigation system. So, they should be able to get good results soon.
We are hearing that the provincial government has prepared a strategy under which Sindh Police is being strengthened by virtue of its total strength, effective training, raising their mobility, its equipments, provision of latest arms and ammunition, incentives, legal protection and creating new wings of special force to combat the criminal at any time on permanent basis. Hopefully, with this type of commitment, there will be good results.

The ongoing targeted operation against the ‘target killers,’ ‘terrorists,’ ‘extortionists and the kidnappers’ seems to be really followed by an effective strategy to ensure a viable peace and tranquility in Karachi.
Importantly, the return from his visit abroad, Sindh Governor Dr. Ishrat ul Ebad is back to his office. That is likely to help defuse the sky rocketing temperature.
However, the self exiled MQM chief Altaf Hussain, a British citizen has his own addiction at will to remote control Karachi from London. Whatever the case maybe, the MQM should show its love for Pakistan by supporting the current ‘Karachi Operation,’ because otherwise, it would be impossible for the operation in the city to continue.
Furthermore, there is high chance for the city to experience worsening circumstances without all parties on board actually.
The other important reality is Karachi is inhabited by around “twenty million” people who belong to different sects and ethnicities, so an autonomous local government is a genuine need of the hour. Otherwise, deprivation of the fundamental rights of Karachiites to govern themselves will keep causing the painful frustration and the siege mentality.
Summing up, it’s worth mentioning that only a careful “diagnosis of the real enemy” is a must to minimize the collateral damage.
I must add here that an efficient and totally fair “surgical cleansing” of Karachi will bring a viable peace.
Certainly, upon return of normalcy, the city will be back to where it was before the deterioration began originally decades ago.

The Candid Overview of National Challenges

It’s said that those who do not learn from history are bound to repeat the expensive blunders over and over. Those having no integrity and proper education are always a “bad news” for the country and its people indeed.  Unfortunately, Pakistan still is struggling to stay afloat against all odds but it can’t go on forever with the status quo.
On top of that, the pessimistic approach of the leadership has converted the nation into a “scared pigeon,” who upon confronting a hungry cat closes his eyes out of fear and quietly surrenders only to end up as a “perfect meal” to the greedy cat’s stomach. So is the case with the vulnerable nation of Pakistan which remains in surrendering/submissive mode.
Attempting from different angles, the stake holders have been responsible for the mushrooming growth of (negative) scenarios pushing Pakistan towards its gradual demise. Obviously, they are taking advantage of the naive nation that has already been manipulated to get drowned in social vices including the rampant corruption and the ongoing dislike of the rule of law.
If democracy in Pakistan has finally been able to survive against the odds, the fact is choosing the electable means the feudal influence plays a major role; the business tycoons too get elected based on their influence. This indicates the presence of reduced chances for an  intellectual who run the risk of being left out and is never able to become a parliamentarian, whereas, the electable does stand a solid chance to reach his seat in the legislature with the potential of becoming the Head of any Ministry regardless of his/her credentials/education or ethical background. If that’s the case, there is going to be the case of administrative failure already. Furthermore, the resulted “sub-standard governance” triggers the birth of rampant dishonesty at every level.
Consequently, a large scale injustice prevails everywhere making it much easier for the enemy to wage a successful proxy war against Pakistan at will.
Despite the conflicting theories, almost every corner of the country has been infected with terrorists and the anti social rascals. Sadly, there is no proper apparatus in place to handle “the armed to the teeth groups,” therefore, the resultant crises of all types keep mounting.
Question naturally strikes one’s mind as to where the UNO is, and what has hypnotized the ruling elite?
Why the main stream global media is reluctant when it comes to pinpoint the real reasons as well as the mastermind behind the cultivated genocide in the Muslim lands?  This unfair practice is highly unethical; hence, remains a strong item for an open debate on various forums anyway.
The fear however is, if the anti-Pakistan momentum is allowed to be maintained at the current pace, and the naive Pakistanis fail to end their divide based on their difference of opinion, then it’s a “win win” thing for those who happen to be other than patriotic Pakistanis.
But, the painful reality suits the most only to those who have anti-national selfish ends built in the foul play.
Certainly, no economic recovery or normalcy can ever occur unless the obstacles are removed forthwith.
Although, the third timer prime minister of Pakistan Mr. Nawaz Sharif claimed during his 19th August 20, 2013 maiden address to the nation that he had been thoughtful every single minute to find ways to deal with challenges, yet he would need to understand more about how his governance business could revive the lost writ without any further delay.
Certainly, calling a spade a spade and distinguishing between the black and white is a step closer to the correct direction without which, one cannot reach the intended goal.
Mr. Sharif agrees that Pakistan has been shaken due to the administrative inefficiency and the overflowing corruption. He accepts that this negative reality has brought the national institutions like PIA, Pakistan Steel, Railway and WAPDA to the verge of virtual collapse.
Admittedly, a massive electricity and gas theft ranging from 150 to 250 billion rupees annually has made the government to launch an aggressive campaign against line losses.
Having diagnosed the problem fully well, Mr. Sharif should be able to remedy much of it, but he has to leave the pessimism behind. During the address, his facial expression and body language showed his disappointing hopelessness.
Surprisingly, the prime minister courageously showed his rage over the drone strikes and termed them as an infringement of country’s sovereignty, yet he didn’t have solution.
He admitted the issue of terrorism was due to the type of foreign policy but he showed his commitment to peace and friendly relations with the neighbours. Again, he failed to show any mechanism to tackle the issue.
As usual, he reiterated that Balochistan would no longer be ignored. His invitation to all political parties to resolve the crisis of terrorism collectively through dialogue or use of force is not a bad idea, yet again; it depends on how skillfully his regime disconnects any links between the militants and their pay masters from foreign or from within.
Mr. Sharif also claimed his regime has been working on overcoming the electricity crisis through the arranged retirement of circular debt worth 480 billion rupees. He claims electricity generation has been increased by 1700 MW.
Disappointingly, the prime minister had little to suggest about the “law & order” situation in Karachi, yet he touched upon his pet projects of motorways and railways.
In his maiden speech, the PM presented himself as sober and thoughtful but not very optimistic. However, he tried to show his sincerity and a new sense of commitment.
His speech will be used on different channels again and again in future to remind him of his commitments. So, he better be careful, as he will remain under microscope when it comes to his delivery as pledged.
Besides his dreaming of making Pakistan an Asian tiger, the chief executive with heavy mandate has been seriously talking about eliminating terrorism to end the vicious cycle of bloodbath, improving economy, addressing power crisis and pursuing good relations with all countries of the region including India for the sake of regional peace and prosperity. He spoke about the Kashmir issue, a good strategy towards Afghanistan and his intended bold review of foreign policy.
When will his dreams come true?  Only, time will tell.

What Does Eid ul Fitr Teach Us?

The end of Ramadan is followed by the month of Shawaal which gives the gift of Eid ul Fitr to the Muslims. Having attained the wealth of Taqwa and spiritual correctness during the daily dawn to dusk “Fasting Work Out” of Ramadan, many practising Muslims fortunately manage to be successful in becoming self disciplined. The positive change makes them feel at peace; immediately next thing for them happens to be the most exciting festivity of Eid-ul-Fitr.  In other words, upon successful completion of the month of Ramadan, the Eid day, in fact is a ‘Thanksgiving Day’ for having gone through a tough exercise towards “self-purification.” Allah o Akber.
The noble Qur’an has clearly expressed the act of Fasting as a blessing and not a calamity: “Allah desires ease for you, not your discomfort. He desires you to fast the entire month, and that you may magnify Him for giving you His guidance, and that you may give thanks.” (Al-Baqarah 2:185).
Among other essential elements is paying Zakat (wealth tax) and Fitra to minimize the harsh impact of any prevailing misfortune, hunger or widespread poverty. Therefore, when it comes to this religious obligation, the Muslims are duty bound to help out the needy people before the Eid Prayer.

Charity: The Muslims are required to pay Zakat based on their wealth and financial ability. It consists of spending 2.5% of one’s wealth for the benefit of the needy people. The good thing is paying Zakat is considered to be the personal responsibility of all Muslims to eliminate inequality and ease economic hardship of others for the sake of Allah subhanahu wa taalaa.

Charity in the form of fitra (fitrana) is obligatory at the end of the Fasting month before the Eid prayer. This again means the real happiness of “EID” lies in sharing our happiness with “the have nots.”
Furthermore, while meditating and prostrating in congregation to God Almighty, the Muslim Ummah actually displays its real spirit of brotherhood and equality. So, on this happy occasion, we should always remember those who are afflicted with poverty, ignorance, disease, or are otherwise less fortunate.
The other beauty is Muslims on this very day are encouraged to erase their grudges or differences if any with others that might have occurred during the year.
Eid day schedule: After offering the regular Salat ul Fajr (the pre-sunrise prayer), the Muslims head out shortly after the sun-rise to perform the obligatory prayer  in congregation (slaat ul Eid) in open areas, community centres, or at masajid in some cases.
However, the important thing is Eid prayer is followed by special Khutba (Sermon) and supplication asking for God's forgiveness, mercy, peace and blessings for all living beings across the world. The Imam delivers khutba explaining to the Muslims about performing rituals of Eid, such as the compulsory Zakat or Sadaqat ul Fitr. It’s extremely important to listen to the obligatory Eid Khutba as well.
The Muslims are encouraged to stay away from worldly desires; they are advised to focus entirely on pleasing and thanking Allah for His merciful blessings. Indeed, it is a rejuvenation of the Deen of Islam, which creates stronger bonds between the Muslim person and his/her Lord.
Right after the Khutba is over, Muslims hug each other wishing Eid Mubarak, and then they visit their relatives and friends.
Also, The Eid gifts, known as Eidie, are frequently given on this precious occasion to children and immediate relatives. Children receive gifts in cash or kind; sweets and tasty dishes are served throughout the day.

Altogether, the caring Muslims donate money generously; they contribute to their local food banks for the less fortunate.
Beyond doubt, Eid is an opportunity for Muslims of different ethnic or cultural background to share together for prayers and celebrations.

Usually, the Canadian Muslims take time off from work to join prayers held in big-city mosques or Islamic centres, convention centres or sport grounds.
In the larger cities of Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Calgary and Ottawa, congregational prayers may be offered at multiple times to accommodate the large number of worshipers.
In many Canadian communities, Muslim organizations and mosques also hold large Eid parties that are open to the entire Muslim community. Smaller Muslim communities, particularly in the rural areas, hold other communal gatherings in masajid or rented community halls.
Some groups reserve other activity centres for the full day of fun and celebration, while others may hold public Eid parties in mosques as a means of OUTREACH to the non-Muslim society.
After the Eid prayer, Muslims usually make long distance phone calls to greet dear ones.
The festival is aimed at promoting peace, strengthening the feeling of brotherhood and enabling the Muslims to move on with their lives normally as a refined Umma in the eyes of our Creator. Hence, the Eid and its celebration in Islam carry a distinctive meaning and spirit as they are totally different from the celebrations in non Muslim communities.

It’s commonly seen that holiday for non Muslims is a chance to indulge in worldly pleasures, or involve oneself sinfully or immorally and unlawfully. But for Muslims, there is zero tolerance in the eyes of Allah subhanahu wa talaa for committing forbidden acts.

In nutshell, the `EID’ is an occasion to increasingly go for good deeds only. The 'EID' doesn’t give an automatic ticket to take a vacation from Islamic responsibilities, and no wasting of time and money is permitted either, simply because our obedience and submission to the will of Allah cannot be compromised under any circumstance.

Furthermore, the ‘EID’ is a chance to multiply good deeds by bringing happiness and pleasure to the hearts of other Muslims, by devoting for the sake of Allah SWT.
Most importantly, it’s the spirit of thanksgiving that make the Muslim Umma stronger all over the globe for the accomplishment of an act of dedication and submission to the total will of Allah, the Almighty.
